Winter Blues
During this time of the year the Earth's energy draws in, condenses, and becomes withdrawn. We who are also Nature, experience this as well. And if we forget, we might think it's something we are doing wrong. We might think there is something wrong with us because so many of us during this time feel lethargic, tired, lonely, depressed. But again if we remember that during winter we ourselves experience a sense of condensing inwards, then it will cut us some slack and allow us to go with the flow of nature.
Now is a good time to practice heating pranayamas like Kappalabhati. Now is a good time to practice heating poses like standing poses and back bends. To gently open up the lungs, to help relieve any respiratory infection and excess mucus. I have been teaching Kappalabhati, lots of standing poses -specifically Warrior poses- and helping the students gently open and warm up their bodies so that our energy which can become a little stagnant during this time of the year, can open more an be radiant.
May we line up with what is happening outside so that we can find balance inside!
On a personal note, it's my brother's birthday and I wish him the happiest birthday! My brother is my main teacher. He and I are 11 months apart and we grew up sharing a common language of movies, books, mythology, sports and games. He taught me about movies, about Greek myths, about Sherlock Holmes, about history. He taught me to play chess and almost every game I know. He was the one I was always trying to find approval from and impress. He is the Frodo to my Samwise Gangee.
I will finish with this story: Jorge and I went to the same school from Kindergarten to College. Every time I did a play in College, every time, right before opening, I would look out the curtain to see if my brother was in the audience. My brother is notoriously late, so he would always be late. But once he arrived, I would retreat back to the wings knowing that everything would be all right.
So Jorge, as I look past the curtains of my every day and find you so happy and healthy, I am grateful to know that everything will be all right.
