Asteroid sighting

We were in the middle of our writing class this evening with my teacher Jack Grapes, when he suddenly said, "Would you guys like to go outside and look at the asteroid?"I thought he was kidding as Jack is a great jester. I had no idea of what he was talking about, which tells me that I better renew my subscription to the LA Times, to the NY Times, jeez, to any Times, but Perez Hilton, which is a site that I unfortunately visit too much. I learned that there was an asteroid about 1,300 feet wide traveling at a speed of 29,000 mph (that's 8 miles per second!), and it was even closer than the moon.

The writing class went and stood outside Wilshire Boulevard, next to the bus stop. I looked up and up until my neck hurt, just like it did when I went to Giza and saw the pyramids. I stood behind Jack as he was shouting out facts about the space rock. The blackboard night was dark save for the moon and the twinkling chalk that literally moved in plain sight.

Is it Mars?
No, Mars is red!
Is it Venus?
No: It's the asteroid!

I had three thoughts:
1) Life is a gift.
2) I need to call my brother and tell him to go outside.
3) I better do tons of Shoulder and Skull Loop to help protect my neck.

We went back inside to resume our writing class. But later after class was over, I went out by myself and found my friend the asteroid. It had moved so fast! I didn't want to keep this to myself so I turned to a stranger and told her to look at the asteroid but she couldn't hear me because she had her iPod. I walked back to the car carrying the secret we all know and forget: Life is beautiful.
