Catching up on this week

I've been carrying my Netter's anatomy book throughout all my classes this week, showing it to students. My latest fascination is the radius and ulna. This has come from tons of studies this year with the genius Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, the dissection workshop with Gil, some personal studying with a gifted movement teacher named Chloe here in LA and with my Rolfer Mary B.

It is all starting to make some sense and the pieces are starting to come together. I was showing the students the illustration of how when the forearm is pronated (palm down) the radius crosses over the ulna and how when the forearm is supinated (palm up) the radius and ulna lie side by side. Also, the radius connects to the thumb, index and middle finger, while the ulna connects to the little finger and ring finger. So when we do Down Dog for instance, it helps SO much to think of pressing down more through the little finger and the ring finger and extending more organically through the other three fingers. Try it. It has helped my practice so much!

Also, my Rolfer, Mary Bond, writes in her wonderful book how the fourth and fifth finger are so underused in our day-to-day lives. If we start to bring greater awareness to them, it will help us get more support on the scapula and the spine. Really great stuff. I am so grateful to learn from so many teachers, so grateful to take time to experiment and practice how it feels on my body, and grateful to be able to share it with my fellow yogis. Yesterday in my 9AM class I had two of my favorite yoga teachers taking my class, Gina and Lucy and they were so taken with what I was sharing about the hands. They were like, "Why hadn't you shared this with us before?" I love that! All that I learn, I want to give it back and watch it continues to live through other's practice.

This week I started teaching my Practice classes at Still. I had my best friends Jenny and Mackie there to support me on my first day. My students Felix and Michelle took my class at 9, then Jenny's at 10:30 and they stayed for the Practice. Wow. And there were other students in class who I'm getting to know a little bit at a time. We played a lot and ended with a 15- minute meditation.

Today at Black Dog it was Aly's birthday and class was just awesome. Aly had given me a list of poses she wanted to do so it was a thrill to be of service to her like that. She is truly one of the best students I've ever had. It is a privilege to witness her practicing yoga. Aly is always smiling, is always paying attention and at the end of every class she always gives thanks. Very few people do that! Aly is such an inspiration.

Yesterday I also started my writing classes with Jack Grapes, whom I have been studying with one and off for the last 9 years. I worship him. Being in classes with Jack really feels like I am following my heart. Through the way he teaches writing, I am learning so much about how to teach yogis how to teach yoga. It will come in handy when Keric and I do our Anusara Teacher Training in January.

What else?
We had a great, fun class Monday night at Black Dog and I will leave soon to teach it again today Wednesday. And right before class, Monday afternoon, my neighbor interviewed me for her documentary. My neighbor Robin filming a documentary on people's relationships to their jobs. She wanted to interview me because I mentioned to her how for me teaching yoga is not just a job, it is a pleasure, a calling, and that which sets me free! Of course some days are challenging but overall it certainly feels like I am on the path of bliss.

I also neglected to mention that last Sunday I taught at Black Dog's Teacher Training on adjustments, and it was such a joy to be with this most mature and thoughtful group.

Things are going really well for me right now teaching wise and wait- I just knocked on wood.

Because my life is so exquisitely busy, I have been adding more meditation time each day. It does help. I can't wait at the end of the month to go to Esalen and study with my guru Sally Kempton for a whole week. Oh joy!

That's it for now.
Off to do some meditation and some restorative and then teach yoga.
Have a great rest of the week everyone.

    Hi Maria Cristina,

When you write, "Also, the radius connects to the thumb, index and middle finger, while the ulna connects to the little finger and ring finger. So when we do Down Dog for instance, it helps SO much to think of pressing down more through the little finger and the ring finger and extending more organically through the other three fingers."-- why is that? I suppose I mean, why does where each bone connects means that we should press through the little and ring finger? I haven't heard this before, so am very curious.

Thank you, as always! I don't always comment, but I always read.

    Cheers,
    Emma
