Evolution of the LA Kula

Recently I got this beautiful letter from a reader named Jennifer G.,

Hi Maria Cristina,

Your name came up in a conversation I had on Friday and I thought I would share it with you.  I practice at Rasa Yoga in Michigan with Todd Tesen now.  We were chatting after class yesterday about LA, City Yoga, and Still and about missing those places.  I said that LA is an amazing (and intimidating, but still amazing) place to get serious about a yoga practice.  I also told him about all of my teachers there who had moved me so much, like you.  He told me about training with this same group of people at City Yoga so many years ago.  I knew this before, but I realized on a much deeper level at that moment how all of you being together at that one particular time in the development of Anusara has had a huge ripple effect for newer generations of practitioners like me.  How lucky to have been a part of that and how lovely that it still matters so much today.

I still read your blog weekly.  Thanks so much for writing it.

Jennifer

Jennifer's letter made me think about the LA Kula. What a blessing it has been to be a part of it, and
how much the community here in Los Angeles has grown. I am going to sound like a really old person but, back in the old days...

Back in the old days, man, it seemed like yoga was just being invited. We would all take every workshop that was announced. When there was a "Backbend" workshop, we took it. When there was an "Arm Balance" workshop we took it. We would share with each other every new pose we just learned. I remember one day Naime showing us "funky pinca mayurasana" as we all gasped!

Now it seems like regular Anusara classes have all those poses that took us so long to learn. Sometimes it feels like some of this difficult asanas are now taken for granted. And yet, there is always need to go back to basics, to keep refining and reminding people of the most fundamental teachings: Cit and Ananda; Consciousness and Bliss. To remind ourselves and others that we are essentially good.

Wherever there is a good Anusara yoga teacher, people will flock to that class. All we can do as teachers of this method is show up, teach a great class with a personal yet universal theme that connects to the grand purposes of practicing yoga, and be of service to our students. I am curious to see where the evolution of yoga in LA continues to go. I love all the different online yoga websites, and think they are an incredible service to yogis all over the world. And I am also saddened to know that so many students are practicing by themselves and not with a group. There is something magical about being in a class with others. It is after all one of the three defining characteristics of Anusara yoga. I remember back in the old days, seeing so many different students coming together to take regular classes, not just workshops or trainings. Just regular classes. Now it seems like we are all spread out. Like LA has too much Organic Energy.

So, thank you Jennifer for your letter!

The universe is being created at every moment and so is our community!

I am pleased to announce that starting next week I will add to my schedule the Tuesdays and Thursday's Practice at Still Yoga. The classes will be held from 12:30 to 2:15. Because LA continues to re-invent itself, I too want to re-invent The Practice. When I teach it, it won't be insane, "cirque du soleil" like. It will be a time to explore poses in a thoughtful and sweet way. It will be a time to be with each other and share learnings. It will be a time to even add in some meditation and restorative.

Interestingly enough, Black Dog Yoga also asked me to teach a practice style class one Saturday a month. This coming Saturday, the 1st I will be teaching it from 4-6. How funny the timing of it all? I am looking forward to witnessing the evolution of both myself as a grateful teacher of this method. I look forward as well to seeing the evolution of my brilliant fellow teachers, of the devoted students and of our community here in LA.
Namaste everyone!

I took Todd Tesen's workshop this weekend while he was visiting! I really like backbends but it was amazing that the arm balance workshop really blew my mind. I think at some point during class, I had to sit and wonder if I was getting a headache or something. And then we did pranayama after and meditation...whoa! So delicious! I'm glad to hear you're doing a Practice class on the weekends. That means, I can actually go take your class!!! xoxox
