Placement of the pelvis when sitting

There was so much learning throughout the weekend at Martin Kirk's Anatomy workshop.
I have to go soon- going to take my friend Mackie's class at Urth Yoga.
But here was one thing I learned yesterday, as we were exploring the pelvis.

I asked Martin about sitting. Traditionally we have been taught to sit on our "sitting bones," which are the ischial tuberosities. However I have been hearing recently, that ideally we want to be more in the front of our sitting bones and also on the ramus.

I heard Martin say yes to my comment and he then expounded quite brilliantly on the placement of the pelvis when sitting. He said to think of the pelvis as a box and find the four corners. I wanted to raise my hand again and ask -just to be sure- if the four corners were: the 2 sitting bones and the 2 sides of the ramus. But the thing with being in a group is that you don't want to take over with your questions and also sometimes I get intimidated out of asking questions! It's such an interesting dynamic, when we are in a group. It was a great group though, everyone there was so interested and focused. And although this workshop was held at Yoga Glo, it unfortunately was not filmed so we won't be able to look back on it and study it again. But that said, I was glad it wasn't filmed because I wasn't intimidated by the camera!

Regardless, Martin went on to say that we should NOT sit on the edge of a blanket. Which I thought was fascinating. He said that when we sit at the edge of a blanket, we are overstretching the connective tissue at the back of the pelvis, in particular that of the origin of the hamstrings. Overtime we are pulling on some of those fibers of the hamstrings and we have a slow-motion hamstring pull. Some of these fibers will reach their stretch limit and overstretch through time. When we sit at the edge of a blanket we are passively stretching and we are not protecting those muscles, tendons and ligaments. And in Anusara yoga we align and engage before we stretch.

Really interesting stuff.
Off to practice. More later.

So what should we sit on? Or do we move farther back on the blanket?

so, if not on a blanket, what is the best way to sit for those tight hips?
Seems if we sit on the floor, then we risk straining the lower back.
A further discussion is in order, please & thank you <3
