Teacher Training and Yoga Mala at Black Dog

Today at Black Dog, I taught for three hours for the teacher training. That was loads of fun! We deconstructed warm-ups and sun salutes. We talked about Koshas, Chakras and the Om. Then later I observed the students as they taught. We ended with a 10 minute meditation. It is a great, mature group and I really feel that each time I teach, I am more confident.

And now, I just got back from the Yoga Mala that we did at Black Dog. Mala means "garland." It refers to the necklaces that yogis wear made of rudraksha beads. There are 108 mala beads and it is said that they are the precursor of the rosary. Throughout the ages and to this day, yogis chant mantras by holding a necklace (or bracelet) and moving from bead to bead. Whenever a yoga studio hosts a Yoga Mala, it means that yogis will be doing 108 Sun Salutes.

Tonight's Yoga Mala was to benefit "Yoga Gives Back," an organization that helps with micro loans for women in Third World countries. Yoga Malas are 108 sun salutes, and obviously they are quite intense and difficult. I took part in it and also co-taught, alongside with Peter, Shari, Margaret, Rachel, and Tyler.  It was sweet group. All the teachers were very considerate and sweet. That said, if I was running the Yoga Mala, I would have planned it in a different way. I would have divided it in four parts of 27 sun salutes each and given breaks in between. It also would have been nice to have some different poses thrown in as well, since tons of sun salutes can be quite intense on the spine. My body is sore and tired!

Now that I am home, I am pooped! I just saw a few "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" episodes from Season 1. I am looking forward to finally watching this entire critically lauded series. I came to it late (it started in 1997), but am looking forward to it, with an open and curious heart!

Before I signed off, I wanted to finally wish a Happy Birthday to my Dad!
Dad, I hope you have enjoyed the blog messages I have left for you all throughout the month.

Growing up, whenever you had a birthday, I always made you a homemade card. Years later I realized that you had saved every car I ever made, and placed them in your drawer by your night stand. You never have thrown anything away that I have given you. Thank you for honoring all that I have created for you.
Hope you have a great year!
Te quiere mucho, tu Maria.
