Jet Lag

Coming back from Puerto Rico and traveling through several time zones, I've been experiencing in the last few days jet lag.  "Jet Lag" is the term given to the disruption of the circadian rhythms; a dislocation of day and night caused by high speed travel. "Circadian" refers to the 24 hour cycle and the word breaks into two words: circa and diem, which respectively mean "about" and "day." So whenever we travel across time zones our internal rhythm is out of sorts with the external rhythm, creating fatigue in the body, drowsiness and even insomnia.

So for my yesterday's Restorative Class at Still Yoga, I used jet lag as an inspiration to do poses recommended for this malaise. I always go back to Judith Lasater's classic book Relax and Renew and find great inspiration in it. And I also practice not only yoga and meditation all the time, but restorative poses as well to see what rings true for me.

After a moment of centering, I guided the students through a few stretches which are therapeutic for the lower back.
Then we sat for a moment and did some pranayama.
Then we did four poses:
•Viparita Karani (wonderful pose to relieve amongst many things, swelling in the legs)
•Mountain Brook (wonderful to counteract the effects of being too rounded forward in the upper back)
•Child's Pose (very nurturing pose)
•Savasana

I've been feeling confident in my teaching of restorative. I now feel like I know what I'm doing. Feel very confident with my physical therapeutic adjustments as well as my verbal adjustments. I did make a mistake though. I was going around the room placing blankets on the students and I forgot to warn someone that I was about to place a blanket over her and she got a little frightened when she felt the blanket. It's so important when I'm teaching restorative to gently remind the students that I'm coming over, since they are so vulnerable and open. This student happens also to be particularly sensitive so I must remember next time to be even more aware.
Lesson learned.

I'm looking forward to being a student this weekend, taking several classes, maybe a workshop or two and hanging out with friends...
