Yoga and Whale Watching

This morning we went to yoga at Maya Yoga. We went  for the third time in a row to study with Nicki Doane and Eddie Modestini. They are such a powerful team. So rigorous and disciplined teachers. The practice today was fiery and strong. Nicki led it and Eddie would come around and give very firm yet loving adjustments. I could feel Pathabi Jois' energy in the room. There were quite a number of stunning pictures of him as a young man doing really difficult asanas. There were also really sweet pictures of him in his later years. He was their teacher, their guru, and their love for him is palpable.  Practice was very different from what I am used to and yet I was so grateful to be there and drink from their well.

For me, as an Anusara teacher and eternal student, it's wonderful to try something new and immerse myself in it. Eddie gave me the highest compliment. After the second class ended, he asked me afterwards if I was a teacher. I said yes and he asked if it was Anusara, and I smiled and said yes! He then said he was impressed because he felt that I was very open minded; very open to him and Nicki. I was so grateful for that. I think it's so important to be respectful of all teachers, all styles. We are family after all! Krishnamacharya taught Iyengar who taught John Friend! Kirshnamacharya also taught Patabhi Jois and Indra Devi and Desikachar. So many of us have studied with those teachers or their students. And the rich legacy of yoga continues onwards.

Later today, we went whale watching! We met with the folks at Whale Foundation, supposedly the best, and rode with a group of about 40 people on this yacht. And oh we saw so much! It's the time where the Humpback whales travel from Alaska to breed in these waters. We saw a mother and her child, really close to us! We saw another whale who kept flipping her tail over and over. I felt like Captain Ahab, like Quint, like The Old Man and the Sea- except I didn't want to catch and kill anything, just marvel.
I kept looking out at the ocean, waiting for that puff of an exhale, where the whales blow out steam- it's their breath. We were all watching the whales breathe and once we saw one, the boat would get close so we could get a better view.
How poetic, we were all holding our breaths, waiting to see a whale exhale.

It's New Years.
I heard it's a full moon and a blue moon. My dear friend Paloma told me I need to swim on the ocean naked and ask for three wishes.
I don't know if I'll do that but I will certainly wish for good health for all, and always bravery.
Happy New Year!
