Aloha

Arrived in Maui yesterday. Felt like I came home- something about the air, the green, the ocean, how laid back everyone is. Tomorrow we will be venturing to our first yoga class. We're planning to go to Skeeter's class at the Yoga Studio in Haiku.

Today we drove around Paia- had lunch at a yummy bakery (crab cakes) then we drove to the beach Hookapi and saw the waves: very choppy and violent. Then we drove east and stopped at a beach called "Jaws" and saw two courageous surfers take on monster waves. There was a crowd gathered and we would all clap whenever a surfer caught a wave. My arms were filled with goosebumps.

We then kept driving towards Hana, stopping at a bamboo forest where we would stop and listen to the bamboo dance. Later still we ended up at a beautiful garden where you can drive for two miles and see ducks, peacocks and beautiful gardens, appropriately called "The Garden of Eden." Wow. Later tonight, we are headed for a succulent dinner at Mama's Fish House. Decadence.

So much in only one day!

Have tried to keep up with the Three Week Meditation Breakthrough Program. It helps that my partner is doing it as well, as we inspire each other. Through all these years I've come to truly love to meditate. It does help ground and seal my energy, which can get a bit unhinged with travel.

Read Beverly Olevin's book The Breath of Juno on the plane ride. Beverly is one of my dear students, Marc's, wife. It was a fun book: scholarly, feminist, insightful. Now I'm reading Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five. Amazing how he has to write about the bombing of Dresden (which Vonnegut witnessed) and the only way he as an author can do it is to turn to surrealism.

I'm also completely hooked on a stupid iphone game called "remove". I can play for hours. I plan to do it later when my boyfriend is not looking. He is horrified that I spend so much time playing it. So am I.
So blessed to be on vacation.

Aloha!
